We enjoyed another highly successful banded event at Balgownie Pavilion last Saturday. As with the previous competition, 16 players took part across two bands, but this time, the overall standard of play was noticeably higher, making for a thrilling day of table tennis.
In Band 1, third seed Neil Paterson (Westhill Alpha) emerged as the standout performer, finishing top with six wins from seven matches. His only defeat came in his final match of the day, a dramatic five-set battle against Dave Furneaux (Westburn Surfers). Both players had match points in a tense decider, with Dave eventually edging it 13–11 in the fifth.
Ikenna Asogwa (CTM Relentless), statistically the strongest player in the field, secured second place. His only loss coming against Neil in another tight five-set encounter (11-4, 13-11, 11-13, 12-14, 8–11). Neil’s resilience was a defining feature of his campaign, as he was pushed to a fifth set on two further occasions—narrowly overcoming Uwe Petermann (Triangle Swifts) 15–13 and then dispatching Stefan Muller (Stonehaven Fireballs 1) 11–3 in the 5th.
Band 2 saw a dominant performance from Przemyslaw Szum (CTM Zagros), who claimed the title in emphatic fashion. He won all of his matches, finishing with an outstanding game ratio of 21–2, an impressive achievement given the strength of the competition.
Jason Fenty (Turriff A), seeded seventh, exceeded expectations with an excellent run to second place, winning five matches. His victory over teammate Rob Tanner proved decisive in the standings. Rob also recorded five wins, but that head-to-head result placed him third overall.
A big thank you goes to Alison Woods for setting up the event on Stadium and ensuring everything ran smoothly throughout the day. Credit also to Donald Pirie for his behind-the-scenes efforts in coordinating players and making sure we had the perfect numbers to run the competition. Above all, it was fantastic to witness the fighting spirit on display in nearly every match.
We remain committed to improving playing conditions at Balgownie Pavilion and look forward to running more banded events next season. If there’s enough interest, we may even introduce additional competitions over the summer.
