Frequently Asked Questions
Children can start playing table tennis socially from about 4–6 years old, using smaller equipment and simple games to build skills. For more serious performance coaching, many clubs begin structured training around 7–9 years old, when children are better able to learn technique and practice regularly. The right age can vary depending on the child’s interest, coordination, and development.
To start playing table tennis, all you need is a bat, some balls, a table, and someone to play with. Learn the basic rules and practice simple shots like forehands, backhands, and serves. As your skills improve, you can join a local club or take lessons to develop your technique and play more regularly.
No, you don’t usually need your own bat when you’re just starting, as many clubs and venues provide equipment. However, having your own bat can help you get used to the feel and improve your consistency as you play more often.
A beginner should start with a decent quality bat, a few table tennis balls, comfortable sports shoes with non-marking soles and good grip (indoor court type, like for badminton or squash) and a breathable sports top for comfort during play. If you plan to play regularly, you may also want a bat case and a small towel. There’s no need to buy expensive equipment when you’re just starting.
Cost of club membership vary between clubs, as it very much depends on the let negotiated each club. For example, Westhill TT Club charges members annually: junior (£60), social (£65), evergreen (£75), senior (£135). ADTTA Balgownie Pavilion monthly membership is £20/month, and you can also pay as you go, which is £5/session. You may also explore Aberdeen Sports Village membership (one venue) and Sports Aberdeen membership (several venues across Aberdeen).
Those interested in playing in the league, need to pay £45/season towards ADTTA registration and Table Tennis Scotland affiliation. Discounts are available for Junior players and Students.
If you are interested in social play only, Sport Aberdeen venues or Aberdeen Sports Village are the best choice. For more serious commitment, joining an existing club is the way forward. Table tennis club gives you regular practice and a chance to play against a variety of opponents. You’ll improve faster, meet other players, and have opportunities to take part in leagues and tournaments if you choose.

As a huge table tennis enthusiast, I soon realised how much I felt at home. They’ve got great support and facilities that actually work around real life — the training facility at Balgownie being a perfect example. It made structuring my training around my work schedule so much easier. I highly recommend it for anyone who loves the sport.
