The North of Scotland Open Table Tennis Championships, known as the North Open, is the premier table tennis tournament in the North East of Scotland. As a Table Tennis Scotland (TTS) ranking event, every match contributes towards the official national rankings, attracting strong competition from across the country.

Each year, the tournament welcomes more than 100 players, including many of Scotland’s highest-ranked athletes. For table tennis fans in the North East, there is no better opportunity to watch the country’s top players in action. The North Open consistently showcases the highest standard of table tennis available to spectate in the region throughout the year.

The tournament has traditionally been held in September at Aberdeen Sports Village, providing an exciting start to the new table tennis season. Following the COVID-19 lockdown, the event was temporarily moved to January for a few years.

In 2026, the tournament enters a new chapter. As a trial, the event will be held in October at the Dundee International Sports Centre, prompting a temporary name change to the North of Scotland/Midland Open. While the venue and name are changing for this edition, the tournament continues its tradition of delivering top-class competition and valuable TTS ranking points.

The North Open is open to all players affiliated with Table Tennis Scotland (TTS), welcoming competitors from clubs throughout Scotland. Over the years, the tournament has also attracted visiting players from England, adding further strength and variety to the competition.

The championships offer a wide range of events to cater for players of different ages and experience levels:

For players and spectators alike, it is an event that continues to promote and celebrate the sport in the north of Scotland.

The North Confined Table Tennis Championships is one of the highlights of the ADTTA calendar, taking place annually towards the end of the season in April. Organised by the Aberdeen & District Table Tennis Association, the championships bring together players from across the region for a weekend of competitive table tennis at Aberdeen Sports Village. The event is open to all ADTTA registered players, with competitors from Inverness and Shetland also invited to take part. This creates a strong and varied field, showcasing some of the best table tennis talent in the north of Scotland.

The North Confined Championships feature three main events alongside six age-restricted categories, giving players of all ages and abilities the opportunity to compete. The three main events are:

• North Confined Open (Rubber Shop Trophy)
• AU Singles (AU Shield)
• Watt Cup

The ADTTA Organising Committee determines the number of entrants in each event based on the entries received and players’ current ratings, ensuring balanced and competitive competitions. All three main events begin with a group stage, with the leading players progressing to the knockout rounds.

In addition to the main events, the championships include six age-restricted categories: Under 13, Under 15, Under 19, Over 19 – Under 40, Veterans 40+ and Veterans 60+.

Junior players are permitted to enter up to two events for which they are eligible, giving them the opportunity to gain valuable competitive experience while challenging themselves against players of a similar age and standard.
