Development pathway

A clear progression for younger table tennis players to improve their game in gradual but well-defined steps

ADTTA’s development pathway

The aim of ADTTA’s development pathway is to provide a clear progression for younger table tennis players to improve their game in gradual but well-defined steps. Our vision is to introduce table tennis in Primary Schools through taster sessions (see Table Tennis in Schools) which introduce them to the skill and also the fun of the game.

Getting started

Those children who show an aptitude for, and an interest in table tennis can progress e.g. to an after-school club or to a junior coaching session run by qualified ADTTA coaches or by their local club. Here they will be coached in the correct techniques of a range of strokes as well as being given information on competitive play and the scoring system. There will also be some fun games to improve skills in a more relaxed way.

Learn, play and improve

Once a player has achieved a suitable level of competence in the fundamental strokes and techniques, they may be invited to enter our Performance Pathway and become a member of one of our Junior Academies, based at either Aberdeen Sports Village (see Aberdeen Table Tennis Academy) or Garioch Sports Centre (see Garioch TT Academy).

Stepping up: performance pathway

Academy coaching provides a more intensive training environment, building on the skills developed at the lower level. Sessions focus on developing more advanced techniques, movement and fitness, match tactics and strategy, and the mental skills required for competitive play.

Train to perform

Players joining an Academy are expected to demonstrate a high level of commitment and dedication to their table tennis. As they progress, they will be encouraged to increase their weekly training hours.

Compete, experience and grow

Players will have opportunities to compete in local and national tournaments, gaining valuable experience in different competitive environments. They may also play for teams in the local league, providing regular match-play experience and helping them develop confidence, tactical awareness and the ability to perform under pressure.
