Scottish Schools Championships
The Scottish Primary Table Tennis Championships and the Scottish Senior Schools Table Tennis Championships are Scotland’s national schools competitions for young table tennis players. They are organised by Table Tennis Scotland and provide a pathway to represent Scotland at the British Schools Championships.
Primary Schools event usually happens early into the season, around November, and Seniors Schools event can be expected much later, in February or March. Both take place at Bathgate Academy, and it’s a 1 day tournament.
Primary Schools event is open to primary school pupils, typically those who are Under 12 years of age on the 1st September of the competition year. Categories include individual boys’ and girls’ singles events as well as boys’ and girls’ doubles competitions.
The Senior Schools Championships cater for secondary school pupils, with competitions including Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 boys & girls categories. Event features group and knockout stages, and those who finish the main category early, compete in the plate event.
Scottish School Championships aim to encourage participation among primary and secondary school pupils, provide competitive experience in a national tournament setting, identify talented players for national representation and, of course, crown Scottish schools champions.
Primary and Senior Schools International
The Primary Schools International Table Tennis Championships and Senior Schools International Table Tennis Championships are annual 3-day-long international competitions that bring together school-age players from the Home Nations and Crown Dependencies. They provide young athletes with the opportunity to represent their country and compete against the best school players in the British Isles.
Participating nations typically include England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Man. Teams are selected through each nation’s schools championships and selection policies.
For consideration for selection for the Primary Schools International held in April, players will be Under 11 on the 1st September in the preceding year. Competition includes Boys’ & Girls’ Teams and Singles events.
For the teams to be selected for the Senior Schools International held in June, the age groups are Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 calculated on the 1st September in the preceding year. Competition includes individual singles and teams events for boys and girls in each age category.
At 2026 event in Cardiff, Wales (26-28 April) ADTTA was represented by eight players: Dean Robertson, Inniyan Jayaraj, Kiishi Adekola, Nikki Mo, Victor Chen, Mathew Pszonka, Jakub Krzyzostaniak and Robbie Martin.
Bathgate’s Assessments
Each year, the Edinburgh & Lothian Table Tennis League (ELTTL), in partnership with Table Tennis Scotland, organises two junior assessment events at Bathgate Academy. Designed to identify and develop the region’s most promising young players, these competitions provide an important step on the pathway towards national events and representative honours.
The assessment programme consists of two annual events:
- U13 & U19 Assessment – held in September
- U11 & U15 Assessment – held in April
These events offer a fantastic opportunity for junior players of all abilities to enjoy a full day of competitive table tennis in a friendly and supportive environment. With plenty of guaranteed matches, players gain valuable experience against opponents of a similar standard while testing and developing their skills.
Each assessment is limited to 64 players, ensuring a well-organised competition with plenty of table time for everyone. Players begin in seeded groups, with their stage one results determining the groups for stage two. This format ensures closely matched competition throughout the day, with every player finishing in an overall placing.
In addition to competitive play, a range of awards recognises outstanding performances and sportsmanship. Trophies are presented to the winner and runner-up in each event, as well as the Player of the Day and Umpire of the Day.
TTS Junior and Cadet National Cup
The inaugural Table Tennis Scotland Junior & Cadet National Cup took place on 17 August 2024, bringing together the country’s top young table tennis players. Featuring a round-robin format, the competition gave every player the opportunity to face the strongest opponents in their category, with events contested in Cadet Boys, Cadet Girls, Junior Boys, and Junior Girls.
The tournament showcased outstanding talent, delivering a day of high-quality matches and highlighting the next generation of Scottish table tennis stars.
To mark the occasion, a new set of annual trophies was introduced following a generous donation from Table Tennis Scotland board member Billy Gibbs. As the inaugural champions, the first winners earned the distinction of having their names permanently engraved on these prestigious trophies.
The Junior & Cadet National Cup is now an annual event. Entry is by invitation, with players selected based on the current Table Tennis Scotland rankings, making participation in national competitions an important step towards qualification.
National Series
The Table Tennis England National Series is one of the highest-level junior competitions in the UK, bringing together the strongest young players from across the Home Nations. Designed to provide regular, high-quality competition, the series gives talented players the opportunity to test themselves against the very best in their age group while earning valuable competitive experience.
The National Series is contested in three age categories:
- Under 13
- Under 15 (Cadets)
- Under 19 (Juniors)
Each age group is divided into boys’ and girls’ events. Players compete in divisions of typically 6–8 players, with each division playing a full round-robin. Following each event, players are promoted or relegated between divisions based on their results, ensuring closely matched competition throughout the series. The player who finishes top after the final round is crowned the National Series Champion.
The series consists of three events each season, held across the autumn and winter months. Results from each round contribute to the overall standings, rewarding consistency as well as individual performances.
National Series events are hosted at leading table tennis venues in England. Recent seasons have seen competitions held at Grantham College (Under 13 and Under 19) and Nottingham TTC (Under 15), providing excellent playing facilities for the country’s top junior players. Host venues may change between seasons.
The National Series is an invitation-only competition. Invitations are issued to the highest-ranked eligible players from the Home Nations: England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man, based on the published Table Tennis England ranking lists. Players who qualify in more than one age group must choose which category they wish to compete in.
The National Series represents one of the toughest junior competitions available outside the national championships. Every participant has already demonstrated a high standard through national ranking events, making each match highly competitive. For aspiring players, selection for the National Series is a significant achievement and an important step on the pathway towards national squads and international competition.

European Youth Table Tennis Championships
The European Youth Table Tennis Championships (EYC) are the pinnacle of junior table tennis in Europe, bringing together the continent’s most talented young players to represent their countries. Organised annually by the European Table Tennis Union (ETTU), the championships have been held every year since their inaugural edition in 1955 and remain one of the most prestigious events in the international junior calendar.
For Scotland’s leading young players, selection for the European Youth Championships is a significant milestone. Representing Scotland on the European stage is recognition of years of dedication and achievement, providing the opportunity to compete against the strongest junior players from across Europe while gaining invaluable international experience.
The championships are contested in two age groups:
- Under 15 (Cadets)
- Under 19 (Juniors)
Each age category includes separate events for boys and girls, with players selected by their national association based on performance, rankings and international potential.
The championships begin with the team events, where national teams compete over several days for the European titles. The final team rankings are particularly important in the Under 19 competitions, as they determine qualification for the ITTF World Youth Championships later that year.
Following the team competition, players compete in:
- Singles
- Boys’ and Girls’ Doubles
- Mixed Doubles
Each year, Scotland selects its strongest eligible cadet and junior players to represent the nation at the European Youth Championships. Competing at this level allows Scottish players to measure themselves against Europe’s elite, experience international team competition, and continue their development within the national performance pathway. Many of Scotland’s most successful senior internationals gained valuable experience at the European Youth Championships before progressing to represent their country at senior European and World Championship events.
The European Youth Championships represent one of the highest levels of junior competition available to Scottish players. Selection is reserved for those who have demonstrated consistent performances in domestic and international events, making participation a significant achievement in any young player’s career. For aspiring players, the championships provide not only the chance to compete for European honours but also an important stepping stone towards senior international table tennis.
