All SVTTA events are currently held at Bathgate Academy, which provides excellent facilities for veterans table tennis. A total of 15 competition tables are set up for each event, allowing a full day’s play across multiple age groups.

The venue regularly welcomes between 60 and 80 players, with competitors travelling from every part of Scotland, including the Highlands and Islands, and even Shetland.

The SVTTA is also exploring the possibility of holding some future events at Dundee International Sports Centre, which central location would make it easier for players travelling from north.

Each season consists of six events:

• Two Banded Events
• Three Assessment Days
• The Scottish Veterans National Championships

This mix of competitions allows players to compete regularly throughout the season while also providing opportunities for selection to represent Scotland.

Banded events group players of similar playing strength together rather than by age. This creates closely contested matches throughout the day and gives every participant the opportunity to play against opponents of a similar standard.

Assessment Days form an important part of the Scottish veterans calendar. Players compete within their age groups while also earning points towards international representation. Results from these events help selectors assess current form ahead of the Home Countries Veterans Championships. SVTTA assessments include the following age groups:

• Over 40
• Over 50
• Over 60
• Over 70
• Over 75

The season concludes with the Scottish Veterans National Championships, the flagship event of the Scottish veterans calendar. While players compete for national titles in the same veterans age groups featured throughout the season, the Championships also include several additional events that are unique to the weekend.

Alongside the age-group competitions, players can compete in:

• Men’s Open Singles
• Ladies’ Open Singles
• Open Singles Plate
• Men’s Doubles
• Ladies’ Doubles

Each category features strong competition, with many players continuing to compete at an exceptionally high level well into their seventies and beyond.

One of the main objectives of the SVTTA season is selecting Scotland’s teams for the Home Countries Veterans Table Tennis Championships.

Players earn points through their performances at the Assessment Days and the Scottish Veterans National Championships. At the end of the season, each player’s best three results are added together to determine the final standings.

The top three players in each age category are then selected to represent Scotland at the Home Countries Championships held later in the summer.

The Home Countries Veterans Table Tennis Championships is the premier international competition for veteran players from the British Isles and Crown Dependencies.

The participating teams are:

• England
• Scotland
• Wales
• Ireland
• Guernsey
• Isle of Man
• Jersey

The tournament is hosted by a different nation each year, giving every association the opportunity to welcome players from across the Home Countries.

The upcoming hosts are:

• 2026 – Jersey
• 2027 – Wales
• 2028 – Scotland

Representing Scotland at the Home Countries Championships is a significant achievement and the culmination of a season of consistent performances on the domestic veterans circuit.

The Scottish Veterans Table Tennis Association continues to provide an excellent programme of competitive events for players aged 40 and over. With regular tournaments, national championships, and a clear pathway to international selection, the SVTTA offers veteran players the chance to continue competing at a high level while enjoying the camaraderie that has become a hallmark of the veterans game.
