Andrew McRae
Andrew began playing table tennis at the age of 10, after first trying the sport at a summer camp. He subsequently joined the ASV Table Tennis Academy in Aberdeen, where he began training and playing more regularly. His interest in the sport was also encouraged by his dad, who had played in local leagues.
As Andrew became more involved in table tennis, he began competing more frequently and entering both local and national tournaments. His first national competition was the Scottish Primary Schools Championships, where he reached the doubles final alongside Joe Cranna. A year later, he returned to the competition and went one step further in the singles event, reaching the final.
From there, Andrew continued to compete at both local and national level, representing Scotland at Primary, U13, U15 and U18 age-group level. One of the highlights of his table tennis journey came in 2017, when he teamed up with Elias Bokedal and Murray Gauld to win the Junior Boys event at the Scottish Inter League. Throughout his junior years, table tennis became a major part of Andrew’s life, providing him with the opportunity to compete at a high level and represent his country across several age groups.
Andrew is one of a small number of high-performing left-handed players to emerge from Aberdeen and has developed a reputation for his all-round game and competitive style. He is particularly known for his high-intensity rallies, consistency across different aspects of the game, and ability to remain calm and composed under pressure.
Today, Andrew has established a career as a Chartered Financial Planner in Aberdeen, while continuing to remain active in the sport. He still competes in the ADTTA League and regularly takes part in table tennis events across Scotland. He also continues to compete in the Senior British League, maintaining a strong connection with competitive table tennis alongside his professional career.
